OVEREXPLOITATION OF WATER: THE ARAL SEA TRAGEDY

THE ARAL SEA TRAGEDY

During the last week we were learning about the Hydrosphere, the water on the Earth's surface. Most continental water is fresh water, but it is only 3% of the total amount of the Earth's water.

97% of this 3% is on the South Pole, Greenland and in Glaciers on the mountains, and just a little amount of the total fresh water is ready for human consumption.

It is very important to take care of the natural resources, and, especially the water. Many times, humans expolit natural resources too much, and this is called overexploitation. Overexploitation is to exploit over the maximun.

Let's see one example of this:

The Aral Sea, the 4th largest inland sea in the World, has been suffering a tragedy for 20 years. Its surface has decreased almost  80 per cent in the last 20 years because of overxploitaition of water supply and pollution.

Below, there are two links:  in both of them you can see the transformations through satellite pictures of the Aral Sea, from 2000 to 2011. Those pictures were taken by NASA and are very interesting.
